TGR M-loco-narrow gauge

After the Second World War The Tasmanian Government Railways had a requirement for medium class steam locomotives. A modified existing design, used by the Indian Railways, was chosen in order to speed up delivery times. Ten M class locos were constructed by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns in England and they entered service in 1952. After the introduction of diesels in 1961 they were only used when diesels were unavailable. The last M Class loco was withdrawn from service in 1975. All ten locos survive to this day, with four in operating condition.
