Interstate Railroad v1 Unfinished
The Interstate Railroad hauled coal in southwast Virginia with a mixture of small and large 2-8-0's, ex-PRR 2-8-2's, ex-N&W 2-6-6-2's, and brand new 2-8-8-2's. It dieselized in the mid-1950's with ten RS3's painted orange, cream, and silver. Southern Railway bought the line in 1961. Interchange was made with Southern and L&N at Appalachia, with L&N at Dorchester Junction, with N&W at Norton, and with Clinchfield at Miller Yard, VA. Operations were not consolidated until 1965 due to the merger agreement. INT (also abbreviated IRR on the steam locomotives, not to be confused with the Ironton Railroad) was dissolved as a company in 1985. One of the three books written about the line gives very detailed info on how it was operated, which became the inspiration for this layout. The scenery is only built between Roda, Derby, Andover, and Kent Junction.
