Chicago & Illinois Midland
The Chicago & Illinois Midland is a line in central Illinois that hauls coal for Chicago's main electric utility, Commonwealth Edison. Until 1955, C&IM hauled trains with a fleet of new and secondhand 2-10-2's and three USRA-copy 2-8-2's with USRA-copy 0-8-0's switching the yards. Green SD9's, SD18's, and SD38-2's hauled 120-car trains of coal until the 38's were sold to UP and replaced with ex-IC SD20's in 1996. Half a dozen SW1200's and the only two RS1325's ever built switch the yard, rotary coal dumper (on the Illinois River at Havana), and local industries. Grain is also handled for online customers. Genesee & Wyoming bought C&IM and painted everything orange. This trackplan is based on the one published in the October 1986 issue of Model Railroader.
