SD39 Illinois Terminal 2301

Illinois Terminal owned six SD39's, #2301-2306. When N&W bought IT, the units briefly kept their green paint and wore a large 'NW' on the sides before three were sold to Boston & Maine. The SD39 is a recycling solution for older engines of lower horsepower, this type of reconstruction also works for GP38s. Basically just the GP38 under a longer hood with more engine weight and two more driving axles, giving a lower minimum speed and a higher adhesion ammount.
