Illinois Midland
Featured in the 2004 issue of Model Railroad Planning on p. 82-85 as a 4x8 plan and an L-shaped for S scale, the Illinois Midland, although distinctly different from the major coal-hauler known as the Chicago & Illinois Midland, was a small 2-mile shortline that served a grain elevator in Newark, IL. Its sole employee intermittently ran a two- or three-car train to connect with the CB&Q in Millington, IL. The IM ran an 0-4-0T tank steam locomotive similar to B&O's famous Dockside 0-4-0T. This was replaced with an ex-CB&Q 60-ton Whitcomb centercab in 1959, then in turn replaced with a small Plymouth industrial switcher prior to 1970, the date of the railroad's extinction.
