Podzol soil is formed through a process called podzolization, which occurs primarily in forested landscapes on coarse parent material rich in quartz. The formation involves the leaching of soluble metal complexes, such as aluminum and iron, from the upper soil layers to deeper layers due to percolating water. This process results in the development of a characteristic subsurface layer known as the spodic horizon, which is composed of accumulated humus and metal oxides.
