Ongar

Epping to Ongar. Opened in 1865 by the Great Eastern Railway and taken over by London Transport in 1935 with passenger services operated by tube train starting after the War in 1957 (services prior to this date were operated by steam trains). From Epping to Ongar, the line was only ever constructed as single-track. Running largely through forest and fields, London Underground was speculating that development would follow as it had on all other Underground extensions. This was not the case. A urban containment boundary was imposed, leaving North Weald and Ongar stations to serve the existing villages and Blake Hall with no development in walking distance. Service between Epping and Ongar was reduced and eventually operated only during the Monday-Friday peak using a shortened shuttle train with passengers transferring at Epping to the main central Line services to central London and beyond. On October 31, 1981 Blake Hall station was closed, and on September 30, 1994 the line from Epping to Ongar was closed. In 2004 service resumed operated by the Epping Ongar Railway Volunteer Society using preserved DMUs and EMUs.
