Bucket chain excavators of the Es 1600 type were built between 1957 and 1965 by VEB Schwermaschinenbau G.Dimitroff for removal of overburden at lignite opencast mines. Like all large bucket chain excavators was moving on rails at speeds between 2,8 and 9,0 metres per minute. The portal was designed for loading excavated spoil into electrically driven trains of spoil cars passing on two parallel tracks underneath. The gross weight of the excavator was around 3200 tonnes. Like all machinery used with opencast lignite mines, it was electrically powered by DC supplied by a nearby power plant.
The bucket chains could be set for upward as well as downward cutting. Up to 52 metres of overburden could be removed from one level of tracks. As the designation implied, each bucket had a volume of 1600 litres. Tractive power for the bucket chains alone was 2000 kW. As the minor letter s in the type designation implies, the upper works could pivot around a vertical axis. This way the bucket chain could be adjusted to the progress of operation. After removal of about 10 m of overburden, the tracks on which the excavator and the spoil trans ran had to be relocated.
Bucket chain excavators working in conjunction with trains for removal of spoil were eventually superseded either by conveyor belt bridges or combinations of bucket wheel excavators and spreaders linked by motile conveyor belts, all of which are invariably running on crawlers.
The asset was created as an industry, which can load spoil into enabled side dumping spoil cars e.g. kuid:142675:1258, :1314, :1262, :1268. Its operation is controlled by skript.
