CIE 101 Class (B) - Black

The 101 Class were built in 1956 by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company fitted with Sulzer engines. Used for mixed use and commonly used on the Waterford-Mallow-Tralee line and the Tralee-Limerick Line. There were the first main group of diesels in Ireland and known for their comort and reliability compared to other mainline diesels such as the Sulzer 113 Class and the Crossley 001 and 201 Classes. During the the 60s after the closure of most of their previous lines, the 101 Class were used for goods, PW and pilot duties. In the 70s there was a proposal to re-engine the 101 Class with GM engines similar to the re-engining of the 001 and 201 Class but a decision was to buy new GM locomotives instead, the 071 Class. By 1978 they were all withdrawn and were lined up to form a sound barrier between the Inchicore Works and nearby houses. They were finally scrapped in 1986 except for 103 which was preserved by the Irish Traction Group and is currently in storage at Carrick-on-Suir.
