DSER Black XXVIc No.18

After the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway reached Waterford the name of the railway was changed to Dublin and South Eastern Railway in 1907. They also thought it was best to repaint their engines in a new black livery and later remove their names. No. 18, Formely named Enniscorthy was built by the DSER at the Grand Canal Street Works, Dublin in 1910 as a Goods Train. But during the Irish Civil War(1922-1923), when the Anti-Treaty side(Those who thought the Treaty offered by the Prime Minister of Britain David Lloyd George wasn't good enough as six counties, three ports remained under British Rule and Ireland would remain part of the British Commonwealth) would sabatage trains and stations to disrupt goods services and the transportation of Pro-Treaty Troops. On the DSER this was common in the South East, On November 1922, The Anti-Treaty had removed a section of track from the embankment just south of Killurin Station where No.18 was stopped at gun point where the train was uncoupled and driven driverless onto the embankment where it derailed and rolled down the embankment into the River Slaney. Michael Forde, the hero of the DSER and the Merchants of Wexford was telephoned and responded immediatly, the line was reopened very quickly but No.18 was a challenge to rescue. Michael Forde said 'Ive often wondered since how we managed it. She was sunk about half way in the mud. At high tide she was completely under water' They got No.18 out by wedging sleepers under No.18 so she could be jacked up out of the mud and was then pulled by chains onto temporary track that went into the river under the engine. The strange thing was that two weeks later the same thing happened with No.32 but were ready this time and No.32 was rescued within the day.
