CIE D4 No.346 Oil Tender
When World War II started and Ireland declared itself Nuetral in the War, Coal became short as most coal came from Britain who were now using their coal for the war effort. Even though Ireland did have a few coal mines, they wern't good for engines. The GSR at the time experimented with using turf(peat from drained bogs) and duff(recycled coal dust), both worked but at a very slow pace extending journey times by a few hours, this brought the GSR to its knees and so joined up with the Dublin United Transport Company creating Coras Iompair Eireann which picked up the railways and services were improving as the War ended in 1945 but Britains coal mines had nearly been used up due to the War. The years after War was over became known as the Emergency Years where supplies were short which later lead to another coal crisis in 1947/1948 but CIE solved this by converting coal burning engines to oil burning engines. Oil burning engines were given giant white spots on the front of the engine and on its tender or tank to notify signalmen that they have priorty against engines struggling with rationed and inferior coal.
