DSER XXa w-Belpaire//GSR/CIE J1

Interchangable Liveries with AJS Script.
The Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway(Later named the Dublin and South Eastern Railway in 1907 and a new livery was applied) ordered two engines when they had a shortage of tank engines and goods engines for the New Ross extension in 1896 and so a solution was made to let Kitson & Co of Leeds to buid them two 0-6-2T engines that had been sucessful on British railways, the DWWR made it clear to Kitson not to make the engines more than 60tons 4cwt so that the engines could climb up the incline to Palace East. However when they arrived they were prone to derailments, after a derailment in the GS&WR North Wall goods yard in Dublin, both the engines was taken to the GS&WR Works at Inchicore to weigh them, they weighed 64tons, 4tons over the limit. After this they were reduced to running on the Harcourt Branch. They were later rebuilt as tender engines to work on the Dublin Harcourt-Shillelagh Goods and they also worked cattle specials. In 1924 and 1925 the engines were fitted with Belpaire Boilers, this modification made them the most powerful 0-6-0s after the Great Southern Railways Almagamation in 1925. This rebuilding of No.4 to add the Belpaire boiler was the last rebuilding to be under taken by the DSER Works at Grand Canal Street Dublin, No.4 was also the last DSER engine to lose its DSER livery not becoming GSR No.449 until 1930. The XXa class was renamed as the J1 Class by the GSR and continued to serve CIE until 1950 and 1940 respectivly. Includes AJS Script
