In 1972, Southern Pacific filed to abandon 4 miles of track which was not run very often. The line was puchased by the state, and auctioned off. A businessman approached the state with a proposal, The Silver River Shortline. The railroad would consist of one locomotive, two boxcars, and a few covered hoppers. The hoppers would be leased from Southern Pacific. The Silver River Shortline (SRS) started operation the folllowing year, serving the town of Applegate. It provided local farms with machinery and supplies, from a local dealer at milepost 1.4, and also moved their grain to the grain elevator in Applegate. In 1977, the line ceased operations due to the death of the businessman. The tracks stayed dormant for another two years, and the locomotives were sold. The two boxcars were stored at a local siding at milepost 0.8, and were abandoned. The covered hoppers were returned to Southern Pacific, and the line fell abandoned until it was purchased by a local farmer, and railroad enthusiast in 1980. The farmer sold 2.5 miles of track back to Southern Pacific, including the trackage with the farm equipment dealer. Southern Pacific gave the Silver River Shortline two locomotives, and a few covered hoppers in return. The Silver River Shortline started to move grain for the farms again, but the line was not getting much use. That all changed in 1984, when a canning company was established in Applegate. the local farms grew with the new business, and gave the SRS more company in turn. Besides being a 1.3 mile operation, the railroad is very busy, and very famous in the surrounding states.
