Inland Empire
Inland Empire v2.0 TRS2004 Compatible
In this scenario your job is to switch together cars into a freight train, then dispatch the freight train to its destination.
You will be operating in a region of greater Los Angeles known as the Inland Empire, between Pomona, Rancho Cucamonga, and Ontario.
To complete the scenario you must switch together the number of trains you choose between one and three, and dispatch them from the yard at Pomona to Ontario. You are not required to drive the freight trains or passenger train, but you control key junctions that you can use to determine where and when a train will be delayed, if necessary. The trains will follow the correct route without your intervention, but you can minimize delays by setting junctions to the proper direction ahead of time. Four key junctions that you will want to watch are CLAREMONT, in the northwest corner of the map, UPLAND in the northeast corner, NORCO in the southeast corner, and YORBA LINDA in the southwest corner. The passenger and freight trains will wait at the two of these four junctions they traverse backwards on their trip until they have been set in a direction that allows passage.
You receive points for completing the switching in less time than is expected, but lose points if you require more time than expected. The switching time period for switching together each train begins when you first move the switcher. The number and distribution of cars is randomly chosen for each train to be built, and the amount of time you are allowed depends on the number and distribution of these cars. The cars may be switched together in any order, but for the freight train to be complete it must contain all the freight cars and two locomotives that you will see connected back to back.
You must return the switcher to the yard office to signal that you have completed switching the train together. If the train is ready for departure, it will be plugged and sent on its way to Ontario. The train may be on any track, but you must ensure that it is in a position where it can proceed forward on the mainline from Yorba Linda to Cucamonga before you return to the yard office. Each freight train is expected to complete the trip in 20 minutes or less. When the freight train arrives at it's destination, you receive 3 points for each car in the train, and either a bonus of 1 point for each minute the train arrives early, or a fine of 1 point for each minute the train is late.
Complicating matters is a passenger train that runs between Rancho Cucamonga and Pomona. This train is expected to complete the trip each way in 16 minutes or less. You receive 5 points for each trip that is completed, but if you interfere with the passenger service and cause a trip to exceed 16 minutes, 1 point will be deducted for each minute in excess of the 16 minute standard. You will also receive a bonus of 1 point for each minute less than this standard that the passenger train arrives early.
Each train must complete three laps before it may arrive at its destination.
While it is important to stay on schedule, safety is paramount, and you will be fined 1 point for each second your train exceeds the speed limit. You will also lose points for hard couplings. The scenario will end if you have a derailment or collision, or if your score drops to -100 or less.
