NSW SRA DB 200 Silver
On 27 September 1937, the NSWGR inaugurated what is possibly the first air-conditioned train service in the British Empire - the famous Silver City Comet. Running over the deserts of western NSW through dust, sand and oppressive heat, the Silver City Comet regularly ran between Broken Hill and Parkes (679km), Orange (804km) or Sydney (1125km) (depending on the timetable and year) until it was finally retired in 1989. The Comet was capable of speeds of up to 130km, making for quite an exhilirating trip over the 'pioneer' line made of short rail lengths and often with sand packed between the joins. The air-conditioned service brought a new standard to passengers from the west, with all passenger trains previously being run through the night to avoid the summer daytime themperatures that often exceed 40C.
