DJ3499

New Zealand Railways Class DJ
Entered service in 1968. The 64 locomotives of this class wiped out steam in the South Island, and ran most South Island services through until the late 1980s when they were phased out as more powerful locomotives were transfered south following the electrification of the North Island Main Trunk Line.
The DJ Class was built in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. It is powered by a Caterpillar D-398 diesel engine rated at 670kW, weighs 64 Tonnes and has a Bo-Bo-Bo axle wheel arrangement.
