V & T loco no 23(Santiago) ca 1870's
Virginia & Truckee No. 23(Santiago) as she appeared in the 1870's.
'Santiago' was one of four near identical engines ordered from the Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1874 and 1876 for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. In 1887, Santiago and the smaller Empire were loaned to Southern Pacific for a year. Then, in 1889-90 a large storm hit Nevada and four engines became stranded at American Flat, with the Dayton(18) and Tahoe(20) derailed. The Reno(11) and the Santiago were fitted with plows and retrieved the stranded engines before going to clear the line to Reno.
She was sold in 1901 to the Boca & Loyalton, which was bought by the Western Pacific in 1916. She was scrapped in November of that year in Sacramento.
Thanks to Andrew Brandon, Craig Hoefer and Curtis Reid for their expertise and help in creating the model.
