V & T loco no 24(Merrimac) ca 1870's

Virginia & Truckee No. 24(Merrimac) as she appeared in the 1870's.
'Merrimac' was one of four near identical engines ordered from the Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1874 and 1876 for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. Her first(and only) accident occurred in 1880 while double-heading with the Washoe(10). A boulder rolled down towards the river, knocking Washoe in on it's way, and rolled up the bank before returning to hit the Merrimac. Her greatest feat came in 1885, when she, double-heading with the Santiago(23) hauled 21 circus cars, 50 feet each, from Reno to Carson.
'Merrimac' was sold to the Verdi Lumber Co. in 1901, becoming their No. 2 'Lonkey'. She was then sold to the Boca & Loyalton a year later, becoming their No. 4 and No. 123 when the Western Pacific took over the B&L in 1916. She lasted 14 years as the WP's only mogul, before being scrapped at Sacramento in 1930.
