V & T loco no 22(Inyo) ca 1877

Baldwin 4-4-0 built February 1875 for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad of Nevada. 57-inch drivers, driver wheelbase 8 feet, total wheelbase 21 feet 8 inches. By the time the engine arrived on 21 March, air brakes were mandatory on passenger service, so Inyo started out as the Gold Hill switcher. It also served on mixed services up and down the hill until being fitted with then-new B11 brake stand and a 6-inch compressor. From this time forth, Inyo was in regular rotation with Reno and Genoa for the Lightning Express. As traffic subsided, Genoa fell out of regular rotaton, and then Inyo. Genoa served as a logging engine in 1900 and 1901; when it returned for rebuilding with knuckle couplers, Inyo took its place. On return, Inyo also received knuckles. The engine was comprehensively rebuilt in 1903 and became the only engine on the road with acetylene lights. It was again in 1910 for conversion to oil firing, and again in 1917 for electric headlights and boiler reinforcement. The engine suffered frame cracking in the 1920s and was retired in 1926. After 11 years as a parts donor, the Inyo was renovated and sold to Paramount Pictures. It was kept in service by the UP shops until 1970, when it played the role of the Jupiter at Promontory, UT. It was sold in 1974 to the State of Nevada along with Dayton, and by 1983 was operating in its 1890s guise. Today, Inyo is the oldest regularly operating locomotive in the United States.
