V & T loco no 11(Reno) ca 1888
Baldwin 4-4-0 built January 1872 for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad of Nevada. 57-inch drivers, driver wheelbase 8 feet, total wheelbase 21 feet 8 inches. The engine arrived when Steamboat Springs was the northern terminus of the road, and ran the first through train into Reno on September 1st, 1872. Reno was always the favorite passenger engine among crews. In 1877, engineer Tom Clark shot a deer from the engine's cab, and had the antlers removed and placed on the headlight. The locomotive's cab, headlight stand, and smoke stack were replaced in 1888, and the pioneering air brake system was replaced with a more modern style in 1891. After that, Reno received the same standard upgrades as other engines on the V&T, including driver brakes, Tower couplers, a 9.5-inch air pump, air sanders, and, in 1907, an oil tank and atomizer. The engine saw less and less service until 1937, when Universal began renting the engine for films. After that, the Reno's role was primarily as a 'relic', serving as the lead engine on railfan excursions and as a film star. The V&T only ran the engine 1000 miles per year between 1939 and 1943, and stored it until MGM offered to purchase the engine in 1945. MGM used the engine in 18 different films and 8 TV shows, then sold the engine to Old Tucson Studios, which used the engine heavily. The engine's boiler ticket was not renewed after the 1970s, and it burned in 1995. The engine was cosmetically repaired and continued to sit at Old Tucson's back lot until August 2021, when it was purchased by Tom Gray. Today, it is based out of Virginia City, undergoing restoration.
