ATSF Class 56

ATSF Class 56

1879 Baldwin built for the Denver & Rio Grande Railway of Colorado, for delivery to the AT&SF. These are odd in terms of their history. The spec calls them out separately, but does not note a different buyer, so it does seem that D&RG ordered four engines for AT&SF. They were used on the Silver City, Deming & Pacific, but by the time of its inception they were three years old. The line was standard gauged in 1886, and the fate of the four engines is unclear. One wound up on the Santa Fe Southern, and became second D&RG 71. 36-inch drivers, driver wheelbase 11 feet 4 inches, total wheelbase 17 feet 8 inches. This version represents the locomotive as delivered in Style 50 livery.
