Original Description:
V200

Entering service between 1956-1959, the V200 class was designed to replace steam traction on routes that weren't scheduled for electrification. These stylish locomotives were predominately fitted with a pair of Maybach 1100hp engines, each
driving the axles of a bogie via Voith hydraulic transmission.

At the end of the 50's, increasing loads saw the v200's constantly worked at their maximum output; and during 1960-1962, a more powerful version with 1350hp engines was developed. Weight was also reconsidered, and reductions were made possible by use of a lighter steam-heating boiler and body frame.

These 50 units were given a new classification, V200.1. Interestingly, Germany experimented no further with dual engined locomotives beyond the v200.1; returning to a policy of more economical single engined vehicles.

Between 1966 & 1969 Spanish Railways RENFE took delivery of a heavier 4000 hp 1668mm gauge version fitted with Maybach M-D 870 V16 engines. The first 11 units, of the Class 340, Nos 4000 - 4010 were constructed by Krauss Maffei; the remaining 21 units being constructed under license by Babcock & Wilcox.
