Class 43 HST
When introduced into squadron service in 1976 as the flagship train for British Rail, these HSTs were marshalled into fixed formation rakes. Therefore they were initially operated in a similar fashion to DMUs and were known as class 253 (WR sets) and class 254 (ScR and ER sets). It was quickly realised that this led to operational
inflexibility, a failure on one car in the set would lead to the entire set being taken out of service. A rethink of HST operation then led to the power cars being effectively split from the trailers and treated under a separate maintenance regime. As a result the power cars then bacame widely known as class 43 and were treated as
locomotives.
197 HST power cars were constructed at the Crewe locomotive works between 1975 and 1982. Displacing ageing locomotive hauled consists initially on the Paddington to Bristol and South Wales services, and later on the main line from Kings Cross to Leeds; the HST consists proved massively popular with passengers, greatly reducing trip times.
Class 43 Power Cars are of a Bo Bo wheel arrangement with a Paxman Valenta diesel engine delivering 2250 HP per unit. An HST set with it's push-pull formation has 4500 HP available for traction.
The Inter City 125 is the worlds fastest diesel train, having achieved a speed record of 148.5 mph during November 1987.
