K-36 Engine Spec
Steam-Engine Specifications for D&RGW K-36
Engine characterics:
Driver dia 44 in
Cyl (2) 20 in x 24 in
Boiler Presure 195 psig
TE(max) 36162 lbs
Max speed 52 mph (est)
Max IHP 1123 hp @36 mph (est)
This engine spec is based on a maximum tractive effort of 36162 lbs and a max ihp of 1123@ 36 mph based on manual stoking at approx 3600 lbs/hr. Max speed is set at 35 mph for DCC operation - with CAB mode speeds above this are possible. The power curve used as a basis for setting this spec was developed with the tzSTEC program and should represent a realistic approximation of the envelope of the max sustained output of the locomotive vs speed. The parameters used in the steam container above are in some cases changed from actual values to give a more prototypical performance within the limitations of the Trainz steam physics system. In particular piston area has been reduced to obtain a starting TE consistent with the prototype and piston-min/max-volumes have been increased to obtain prototypical water consumption rates.
The burn duration per shovel has been set to approximately 30 seconds. The shovel coal mass is set to give an integer value of 26 liters of coal per shovel since TRS uses integer amounts to decrease the queue contents. A firing rate of 2 shovels/min will give a reasonable aproximation of the fuel consumption and maximum evaporation rate rate at full throttle. Note: the actual manual stoking value would be approx 16 ltrs/shovel which can be used if coal consumption is considered too high as the amount of coal consumed per shovel has little effect on the amount of heat produced. The power is based on boiler output at the manual firing rate indicated.
For use in TRS2004 the TE at starting is increased by approx 20% of the rated performance specified above to compensate for the TRS2004's incorrect effect of gravity on grade resistance. The increase reduces to match the predictied performance at 36 mph. In TRS2006 the included steam-power curve corrects the output to give the predicted performance thruout the speed range.
No of axles has been increased from 7 to 51 to account for increased resistance of steam locomotives and will give approximately 20lbs increased resistance/ton of weight on drivers.
