In 1879 six of these four wheeled passenger cars with platforms on either end and a centre aisle were purchased by the Grandducal Baden State Railways. They were meant for service on rural branch lines, while conventional compartment cars were preferred for main line traffic. Additional coaches of a slightly altered design were obtained in 1885 and 1889.
They had one first class and two second class compartments and were the first passenger cars to be fitted with a toilet compartment. To provide better daytime illumination and ventilation a skylight was fitted. Granducal Baden State Railways were experimenting with this kind of roof design at that time. Unlike other state railways skylights did not become popular in Baden and were soon abandoned in favour of other roof designs. Nighttime illumination was by gas lamps. Like all other passenger cars of the Grandducal Baden State Railways they were fitted with continuous Westinghouse brakes.
