Leaving Tamworth the line winds its way northward through the wide valley gradually gaining elevation. On reaching Limbri the line starts its first steep climb for 25Km. More steep grades reach the highest points of 1100 meters elevation. The line crosses the watershed of the Great Devide five times to reach Armidale on the eastern edge.
