Le carrozze Z1 costituiscono l'ultima
generazione di vetture costruite dalle FS,
con caratteristiche conformi alle prescrizioni
internazionali del RIC (Regolamento Internazionale
Carrozze). Questo tipo di carrozze appartiere
alla serie UIC-X, costruita per essere impiegata
in composizioni a treni su lunghi percorsi,
Intercity (IC) per servizio interno, ed Eurocity
(EC) per il servizio internazionale e per
viaggiare alla velocitа massima di 200 km/h.
Le carrozze Z1 sono state ordinate in tre
periodi diversi: 1985, 1987/88, 1993 per un
totale di 795 esemplari; le prime carrozze Z1
sono entrate in servizio nel 1987.
