Box 50 CSX 126401

50Ft Pullman-Standard 'Waffle side' boxcar

Outside braced boxcars with sidewall indentations began appearing in 1965. The indentations allowed belt rails (part of the cargo restraints) to be mounted within their recessions, thus allowing for the maximum utilization of a 'smooth' cargo space. The cars were so different they were given the new AAR class designation 'XL,' indicating they were 'loader-equipped.' Pullman-Standard introduced its 'waffle side' cars in 1969, starting with an order for the L&N. This particular car has been fitted with a Youngstown Door.
