Borden's Fine Cheeses Reefer
Borden's Fine Cheeses Reefer (Rev 0) 40 foot billboard steel ice-loaded reefer (Refrigerator Car) circa mid-1930s, also known as a Diary Car. These once represented progressive technology over wooden reefers: a) Corrugated steel ends dramatically improved structural reliability with shifting loads and ice dumps; b) greater environmental longevity than wooden construction; and c) an elaborate mobile full-length billboard marketing tool was available to the owner or advertiser. The only drawback was the steel better conducted heat into the car whereas wood was a better insulator. Ice reefers remain superior to their contemporaries with respect to their ability to immediately load "warm sun-heated produce" without requiring a cool-down period. The facade of this model was scanned from a 1959 Mantua/Tyco HO scale car which actually has a steel billboard overlay on plastic. This model version unfortunately uses a box car template, and therefore does not depict roof ice doors.-Russ Grasso (deneban) 4/03
