Petersburg Shortline 4-6-2 #578

The K-11 hails from around 1910 to 1911. The design is somewhat similar to the earlier K-3 class, but with a notable distinction: K-11s had short, 69 inch drivers; this driver size was a perfect fit as the engines were intended to be used in both freight and passenger service. These machines found a niche, and were used in both freight and passenger service into the 1950s.

After the Boston and Albany purchased a group of the New York Central's K-11f class in 1920 and rebuilt them as class K-11g, NYC number 3182 became B&A number 578, and was rebuilt with 72in. drivers, as compared to the K-11f's 69in. drivers. Around 1951, the class was bought back by the NYC and renumbered again to 4378 before being bought by Andrew S. Rolfe in 1952. Until 1987, the locomotive was kept in storage near Rolfe's residence. It was bought then by the Petersburg Shortline Railroad, where it was rebuilt back into the original K-11f design of the NYC, albeit using a new tender, only carrying 12 tons of coal instead of the original's 16. Today it works as an excursion engine for the shortline and maintains it's namesake as the main attraction of the Petersburg area.
