NSW Government Railways 42 Class

This is the orginal Auran Brew Crew mesh and set up to run in TS12 - the rear of this unit is nothing like NSWGR 42 but is in fact VR B class

Clyde Engineering secured one of the first local contracts for mainline diesel construction with an order for 6 42 class locomotives in June, 1954. Based on the General Motors Company EMD-F7 unit, but with significant modifications to suit the Australian loading gauge and operating conditions, the class leader emerged from the Clyde factory on November 16, 1955.

The 42 class were extremely reliable units, with early duties seeing the class rostered on the prestige passenger services of the day. After the introduction of the 44 class in 1957, the 42s were assigned to the southern line, where they remained for the rest of their service life.

Later years saw the class dogged by increased unreliability and a reputation for rough riding, with union bans resulting in the locos being restricted to second unit status only. Most of the class were withdrawn in 1982-83, although 4202 was scrapped in February 1979.

Today, 4201, 4204 and 4206 are preserved, with 4201 and 4204 remaining operational.
