The locomotive is serially produced at the Novocherkassk electric locomotive plant. The electric locomotive EP1 positioned by the manufacturer as a substitute to domestic locomotives VLC and previously imported from Czechoslovakia CS and CHS4T. Since 2007, manufactured modernized locomotive APM, as well as its variant APP when you want by changing the gear ratio of the traction reducers increased draught. It is designed specifically for use on heavy profile of the Russian Primorye and has a separate, beginning with 001, numbering. From EP1 upgraded locomotives differ mainly by the asymmetric installation of lightweight current collectors, plastic block cabin with changed working place of the driver.
