Union Pacific 8500HP GTEL B-Unit

The B-Unit of the GTEL set contains the primary gas turbine. Rated at 8,500HP the turbine supplied power to twelve traction motors. The turbine itself consumed massive amounts of 'Bunker C' fuel; a thick black oil, Bunker C was considered waste at the time, so fuel economy was cheap compared to that of a diesel. Nickednamed 'Big Blows' for the high-pitched screech let out of them, the turbines ran from the beginning 60's, until the end of the 1970's.
