Union Pacific 9014 Locomotive

The Union Pacific 9000 series locomotives were built by The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1926 and 1930. These locomotives were the largest successful 3 cylinder locomotives in the world and were capable of generating 96,650 lbs of tractive effort. The 3rd cylinder and running gear is located between the frame and the valve gear for the 3rd cylinder was operated by a mechanism known as the Gresely Valve Gear. This valve gear consisted of 2 rocker arms that were attached to the extending valve stems of the outside cylinders and sat on the front of the locomotive. The inverse sum of the motion of the two outside cylinders created the proper motion for the valve of the 3rd cylinder. The locomotives were designed to pull 100-125 box car consists at speeds of 50 mph. The Union Pacific was the only company to buy and use this wheel arrangement and purchased 88 locomotives of this type.
