In 1990, to replace the gradually aging Pafawag wagons, Malaya Yuzhnaya received six new PV40 wagons (model 48-051) built in 1989 by the Demikhov Machine-Building Plant. 6 Pafawag wagons (5 wagons from Pionersky and one from Orlyonok) were stalled and subsequently decommissioned, and the train from the new wagons began to play the role of the second “auxiliary” train. Despite the fact that the PV40 wagons are almost three decades younger than the Pafawag, the main team is still the eaglet - this is due to the softer running of Polish wagons, and their greater spaciousness, and with a higher level of comfort in Pafawag wagons. For example, the seats in the PV40 cars are simple wooden benches. The new composition began to be called 'Pioneer', but the composition never wore such an inscription. In the 90s the train was not used - fuel for diesel locomotives became more expensive, there were fewer passengers. In 1997, the composition was renamed Barvinok. This name was carried until 1999. As far as the authors know, under this name the train was never used in train work. Unfortunately, we do not have a single photograph in which the composition of the PV40 wagons would be captured with the inscription 'Barvinok'. In 1999, the train changed its name for the third time — now to “Unity Pivdenno (Youth of the South”) - which it bears to this day. In the same year, the use of the train on holidays was resumed - on May 1, 1999, as an experiment, travel along Malaya Yuzhnaya was made free of charge, and there was no end to those who wanted to ride.''
