auto-train 4-4-2 Sleeper
SUPER CHIEF
The Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe railroad launched the first streamlined Super Chief in 1937 with lightweight, fluted stainless-steel cars built by the Budd Company. Hauled by 6000hp ABBA F7 sets, the extra fare train made the journey between Chicago's Dearborn Station and Union Terminal in Los Angeles in 39 hours and 45 min.
The Super Chief was North America's most famous passenger train, with luxuriously appointed conveniences including dining cars operated by Fred Harvey.
The last ATSF operated Super Chief, train #18, arrived in Chicago on Sunday, May 2nd, 1971; when the railroad
reluctantly handed operation of the streamliner to AMTRAK. In 1974, Santa Fe concluded that the operation
of the Super Chief under it's new owners was of a much lower standard, and asked AMTRAK to remove the name from
their Chicago - Los Angeles service.
