VR S 302
Four of these magnificent three cylinder pacifics were built in the VR's Newport workshops between 1928 and 1930 for fast express passenger haulage.
Modifications to improve performance were made in 1935, the visible signs of which were: the addition of smoke deflectors, the replacement of the original elegant chimney with a plain one and the addition of a sloping shield under the smoke box.
All four locos were streamlined in 1937 and given large 12 wheel tenders to haul the new all steel 'Spirit of Progress' express non-stop between Melbourne and Albury, a distance of 200 miles.
They were all scrapped between 1953 and 1954.
