Northern Railway | 3.1.1 [TotT]

The road was built in June 1942. Before 1947 the route was called the North Pechora Railway. The total length of the route for 1954 was 1953 km. The road was managed in the city of Kotlas. The road included lines Konosha - Kotlas - Vorkuta and Girsovo-Kotlas. The construction of the Kotlas-Vorkuta highway began in 1937 and ended on December 28, 1941, when the last section of Kozhva-Vorkuta was completed and the train traffic started to be built. The Pechora railway lines were built by the Gulag prisoners mainly during the Great Patriotic War. The construction of the road contributed to the development of oil fields, coal, and forest resources of the North. Regular train traffic was opened on the Velsk-Kotlas-Pechora line in 1942, on the Pechora-Vorkuta line in 1950. Separate lines (Girsovo-Kotlas and Konosha-Velsk) were built earlier (in 1897-1899 and 1929-1934 respectively) as the Kotlas line Perm- Kotlas railway and timber line of local importance, respectively. The main cargo transported by road: coal, oil, timber, mineral building materials.
