ARG XC bauxite hopper 2000+

While alumina is a major rail traffic, bauxite is also moved by rail. Most mines use long conveyer belts to supply their refineries, Kwinana being the exception. It’s bauxite is moved by conveyer belt to the Pinjarra refinery (located at Calcine) and then railed to Kwinana. Over 8 million tonnes is transported annually. The XC class hoppers (ironically made from aluminium) first appeared in 1968 as an improved XB type, with 113 being constructed by Midland Workshops in five batches between then and 1981. They were initially used in the short Jarrahdale to Kwinana haul, the current haul from Calcine being 81km long. An export bauxite haul from Calcine to Kwinana commenced in November 2016. It uses XG wagons purchased by Aurizon from Synergy.
