SAR 740 Class locomotive

As part of Australia's contribution to the rehabilitation of China after WW2, Australia offered China 50 new steam locomotives. The 2 designs given were the NSWGR 38 Class or the SAR 700 Class, and China opted to go with the 700 Class design. In 1949, the Nationalist Government in China was overthrown by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). As a result of the CCP taking power, Australia's contributions to China's rehabilitation ceased.
The Australian Government was able to renegotiate the contract of 50 locomotives with Clyde Engineering, with only 20 built. Ten were taken by the Commonwealth Railways as the L class despite them already having new diesel locomotives, with the other ten being converted to broad gague and going to the South Australian Railways as the 740 class. The class consisted of locomotives 740 - 749, which entered service from 1952 to 1953. They did not steam as well as the 700 and 710 class, but were more versatile than the heavier 600 and 720 class. As a result, the 740s remained in service until the early 1960s when replaced by diesels. The last, 747 was condemned in November 1965. No 740s were preserved, but a member of the 700 Class that they were based on, 702 was preserved.

Disclaimer: While this asset is trainz-build 3.7 (TRS12 SP1), it was tested in TRS22 and uses features which may not work or look the best in previous versions (including the native Automatic Running Numbers system introduced in TANE, and the m.tbumpenv textures designed to look best in TRS19 and up.)
