Train to the Clouds
Here is presented the Salta Antofagasta railway that links Argentina with Chile in a 941 km route. The Argentine part of 571 km begins in Salta (1000 m height) crossing the Andes Mountains below the 4000 m surrounded by peaks of 5000 to 6000 meters height. The Puna the Atacama plateau begins and the railway reaches 4400 m height near Tocomar station, following La Polvorilla (4200 m) and San Antonio de los Cobres (3800 m) and finishes in Socompa (3780 m). Was constructed between 1921 and 1932 and designed by the American Eng. Richard Maury. The Chile section has 330 km beginning in Socompa (3780m) and finishes in Antofagasta city in the coast of Pacific Ocean. The construction of Socompa Antofagasta section was finished in 1947. In 1960 a group of Argentine students named the railroad Train to the Clouds and the nickname became popular in Argentina. Because of this I used this name for the layout.
