CLMW F7B-3

Produced between February 1949 and December 1953, the Electro-Motive Division F7 is a 1,500 horsepower diesel-electric road locomotive. With over 3,800 units sold, it was the most popular of EMD's F-series. First purchased in 1949 by the Cleveland, Lorain and Midwestern, the EMD cab units would serve as primary road power for the line. The locomotives would serve well, and the CLMW would eventually roster sixty of the classic EMDs alongside their SW7 switchers and FA-1 passenger power. When the CLMW order of SD40-2s was delayed to 1978, from their initial order in 1974, the Cleveland, Lorain and Midwestern began the Locomotive Life Expectancy Addition Program, or LEAP, on all of their 567 engine-equipped units. LEAP gutted the 16-567 of the F7A, replacing it with the at the time modern 12-645E producing the same horsepower. In essence, it makes the CLMW F7Bs prime mover equivalent to that of a GP15-1. The sixty F-units would continue to be the road's main power until the SD40-2s arrived, which took over the railroad's heaviest trains. Despite these new units, the F7s would not be retired and continue to serve today on many trains on the CLMW network. Designated as F7A-3s or F7B-3s, this distinguishes these units as having been heavily modified, including fitting of PTC.
