CLMW Lightweight Baggage - 1971

Lightweight cars make up the backbone of rail passenger service in the United States. The CLMW was no stranger to this type of railroad car, and this particular type is a baggage car, suitable for both commuter and long distance trains. The paint scheme featured on this car is the paint CLMW was using right before the 1971 Amtrak takeover of long distance trains, however the scheme has not changed since then and as such would look at home behind the CLMW freight diesel electrics of today. The CLMW's baggage cars were equipped with head-end power cabling throughout, allowing them to be placed at both the front and rear of trains. They were most commonly found on long distance trains where additional checked baggage was common, however shorter routes also saw baggage car use as well, though at a lesser degree. The cars were also suitable for express parcels service when it was impractical or inefficient to place smaller packages onto larger freight trains.
