Auran's UP Big Boy #4006

The Union Pacific Class 4000 4-8-8-4, nicknamed 'Big Boy' is considered the largest successful steam locomotive ever built. With a tractive effort of 600 kN, the Big Boy was the only engine that alone pulled the heavy freights over Sherman Hill in Utah, USA. The Big Boy was built by Alco Locomotive, and the first series of 20 began service in 1941. 5 more joined in 1944. These 25 huge steamers remained active until 1962 and travelled over one million miles each!
The Big Boy weighed in at 345 tons and put a load of 245 tons on the 68 inch drivers. Although primarily built for pulling heavy loads, the Big Boy could handle speeds of up to 80 mph. However, most power was found in the 30 mph region. One engine was tested to an impressive 6290 horsepower.
The #4006 Big Boy now sits at the Museum of Transportation in St.Louis, Missouri.
